Boost to County’s Economic Outlook as IDA Board visits Wexford

The Council Chamber at Wexford County Council Headquarters provided the venue recently when senior members of the Executive and the Board of the IDA travelled outside Dublin for meetings of the Board in County Hall, Carricklawn Wexford.

The meetings continued for most of the day and included a detailed presentation from Wexford County Council Chief Executive Tom Enright, and Director of Economic Development and Planning Services, Tony Larkin, who outlined to the Board the Council’s ambitious economic development strategy to increase the availability of new commercial office and industrial space and to grow job opportunities throughout County Wexford.

IDA Chairman Mr Frank Ryan thanked Wexford County Council for its courtesy in making the Council Chamber available to the Board. The Chairman complimented Mr. Enright and his team on the level of ambition and planning demonstrated within the Council’s Economic Development Strategy and pledged the full support of the Board of the IDA is helping the Council to deliver the Strategy.

This is the first time a board meeting of the IDA has taken place in County Wexford and is seen as a welcome endorsement of the Council’s highly ambitious range of economic development initiatives and associated capital investment programme.

Mr Enright commented “We were delighted to have the opportunity to present our plans for the development of the local economy in Wexford and to showcase all the county has to offer as a great place to do business with a great quality of life”.  He added “The imminent construction of the M11 Enniscorthy and N25 New Ross Bypasses provides greatly improved access to the county and significant business opportunities.  The Council’s first of many economic development projects has recently been completed with the opening of the ‘Hatch Lab’ Technology Innovation Centre in Gorey.  The ‘Hatch Lab’ is already becoming a thriving centre for new start-up businesses and is attracting a lot of attention from the IDA and Enterprise Ireland.”

Mr Enright stated that Wexford County Council will commence construction of a new large-scale advanced factory in New Ross in 2018 while the Council will also be seeking planning approval for a Business and Technology Park adjacent to St Senan’s in Enniscorthy within the coming weeks.  He added that plans for the Trinity Wharf site in Wexford were being advanced and would be made available for public consultation in 2018.

Mr Enright was keen to emphasise that the Council’s progressive plans for economic and community development could only be delivered with the Council providing the necessary funding and he paid tribute to the Councillors for their support in approving modest increases in Local Property Tax and commercial rates.
He stated “I have no doubt that the investments being made in much needed economic and community infrastructure over the next 3 or 4 years will help to create hundreds of jobs and provide important amenities and recreational facilities throughout the county”.
